My First Review

But for those with patience and some time between classes, there is treasure to be found here. One of the first pieces in the natural progression around the room is Wiley Aker’s“Newport Days Are Over for a While.” The listener is prompted with four different street mapsof Poughkeepsie, and informed from the cue card that the piece is composed of soundsrecorded around Poughkeepsie. What gets you is the absolute depth of the piece. In no otherrecording at the gallery was there a greater variety of different sounds on one track, and all ofit so seamlessly mixed together. It is the most explosive of the bunch probably because of ourprecepts of Poughkeepsie: It’s a boring and predictable little place, easily summed up by thevague maps on display. Who knew that there was such a thriving ocean of sound to be found, beautiful and strangely sad?
