I just went back and reread an article by Moholy-Nagy that was essentially arguing for the use of the phonograph as an instrument of production rather than reproduction. He hoped in doing this to open up a new variety of sounds and return music making to the composer by taking it out of the hands of what he called the “amateurish reproductive talents” of the performer.
